Matte Nail Polish

Part 5 of the "I Don't Get It" series.

Matte nail polish seems to be very popular these days, and if the polish itself does not have a matte finish, you can buy a top coat that mattifies the glossy or shimmery polishes you already own, such as essie's Matte About You.

I'm not a big fan of this trend. When it comes to nail polish, I want the finish to be as glossy and shiny as possible. In fact, using the mirror-surface of my nails to reapply lipstick would not be an unreasonable request!

Besides the good technique of the application, do these images look pretty to you with the flat, dull finish?

What do you think? Are you enjoying this as a passing trend or would you not touch matte nail polish with a ten-foot pole?

  1. I wouldn't touch this trend with someone elses fingernails! I don't get it at all....

  2. I hate matte nails. First, it looks weird. Second, it chips easily. Definitely on my list of beauty trends to avoid.

  3. I hate it. I can understand having a different finish on your nails from time to time and maybe a few variants on super glossy would be interesting. But basically matte = dull in more senses than one. Healthy bare nails have a sheen to them, so why would anyone want to fake matte nails?

  4. Oh, I don't like this either. I think it can look ok if done in combination with some shine, like if just the tips are matte

  5. I didn't get it either and have yet to wear it. I like really high shine finishes as you do, but I like the look I saw in one of the Chanel Holiday ads in which the nail was painted in high-gloss red and the tip was painted with clear matte polish in a variation of a French manicure. I thought it was kind of interesting.

  6. I love matte nail polish! However there are mattes that are better than others and the ones I like are from Manglaze. They have that shimmer in them which makes a matte more wearable. I also like OPI suedes, matte with glitter.

  9. I'm not a fan either. I've seen some interesting designs done with matte shades and top coats, but I don't think I'd wear them myself. I like my polish to be as glossy as possible too.

  10. Sorry, people, I just got my post-hurricane Irene internet connection back. I could publish your messages via my smart phone, but I couldn't comment. Internet withdrawals are embarrassingly unpleasant.

Crystal, your comment made me laugh!

Liz, I hadn't considered the chip factor. Interesting.

mq.cb, excellent point about the natural nail having a sheen to it.

Dovey and Ava, I'd love to see a manicure with the matte tips--I bet that looks really interesting--especially with Chanel red polish! I think Dain (Ars Aromatica) might have done something like that in one of her recent posts. I remember she did some very interesting reverse French manicures, but I can't remember is she used any mattes.

Olivia, yay! Someone who likes it. You have such good taste in color and texture, I am sure it looks smashing on you. I will have to go check your labels. I don't remember seeing a matte with shimmer--that sounds interesting and certainly not flat or dull.

    Grace, so you'd alternate nails?

Ammie, yep, on other people, like Olivia. :D

Nat, gloss for the win, heh.

  12. Not for me. I don't like it on other people and I won't wear it either. I bought the Essie product and then kicked myself after and gave it away.

  13. I've tried to like this trend but after I see the flatness on my nails- I always give in to the shine and apply a top coat!

  14. It's different looking that's for sure. Haven't tried it yet. I don't mind how it looks so much. but if it chips easily like Liz says then I won't go there!

  15. I don't get it either, why would someone want their nails to look like this is beyond me.
