Cosmeticus Interruptus: Estée Lauder Chelsea Rose

I'm not going to taunt you with things you can't have, but I am going to start a series about excellent products that have been discontinued just because they weren't selling well. What about meeee, you hateful cosmetic brand? Don't you care that the product you knocked off your line was my favorite?

Because I am an odd person, I think I shall start this series with a product I never knew existed until after it had been discontinued. I blame Dain, editor and writer of the of Ars Aromatica blog, because this lipstick makes a frequent appearance in her articles, and now I know why. She calls it her version of nude, and I think it might be mine, too. Like Dain, my lip pigment eats up color, so this pretty mid-toned rose appears as a sweet rosy pink on me.

Without further ado, I bring you Estée Lauder Signature Lipstick Chelsea Rose.

Bottom line: A worthy edition to my shrinking lipstick stash, even if it's the only tube of this color I ever get my hands on.

Are there any discontinued lipsticks that you adore and wish were still available?

  1. ooh that is pretty, my type of colour. I know there were some Armani shades in their old smooth and mania formulas that I sadly missed when they got rid of those lines, but I'm always able to find another lipstick to adore ;)

    1. I always can find a lipstick I adore, too. No matter what. There's always one out there, and I am not waiting for my small shipment of Revlon Colorburst lip butters to arrive. I don't usually go gaga over drugstore lipsticks, but by all accounts, I should with these. And you just KNOW they'll be yanked away one day soon.

  2. absolutelyy, especially if we're counting ones that were limited edition to begin with. i get supply & demand but if your lipsticks are selling out the day it's released, doesn't that mean your supplyside is sorely lacking >:( someone needs to go teach Mac some economics. and i was actually thinking of doing a series on highly sought items that were part of the limited edition mess but it makes me feel bad that ppl can't go out and get it as welll but i think you should anyway and i prolly will as well xDD on a random note, i love lipsticks that have imprints on them, even though it makes me loathe to use them up and mess up the design. xD

    1. Isabella, I bet you'd have a hard time using Paul & Joe lipstick with the little kitten heads. Oh, and MAC? Completely on purpose, trying to create THE mass hysteria of lemmings. They're like the Nike of lipsticks. It's actually a smart business decision to release hot products in inadequate amounts (and it makes eBay sellers rich!) but it's no fun for the average consumer.

  4. That looks lovely! I have a feeling my favourite Guerlain lipstick (Beige Nude) has been discontinued. I learned of this when someone asked me about possible dupes. If I don't know what to wear, I frequently reach for it and there's not much of the stump left. I better get on and start looking for a replacement!

    1. As disheartening as a discontinued product is, the thrill of the hunt for its replacement can be quite fun!

  5. Very pretty, and so sad it's gone. I just found out my beloved Rouge Coco in Paris is being discontinued. And yes, I immediately went out and got a backup, since of all my reds (and you know there are dozens in my collection), it's my favorite. My response to the news was just as you described: "What about meeeee?!!"

I think I would have liked to have tried this one, since I'm trying desperately (and so far unsuccessfully) to find a color that can pass as a nude/MLBB shade that doesn't make me look like a corpse. And I LOVE the "love" etched into it!

    1. This may be a surprise, but I hardly ever buy backups anymore. I used to buy immediate backups of lipstick I love, even while they were still in stock with no plans of being phased out, but if there's one thing I learned about myself in the last 5-10 years, it's that I almost never finish a lipstick.

The bad news is I have too many, more than I could use up in a year (and we really should try to use our lipsticks within a year ;) ) but the good news is there is an infinite number of gorgeous colors out there, with ever-improving formulas, yet to be discovered by meeeeeee!

(My sympathies for the dearly-departed Rouge Coco Paris.)

  6. Heheh when I saw this in my blog feed I immediately thought of Dain, it's good to know she has this lemming effect on other people and not just me.

That is such a cute lipstick, I'm not sure it would suit me but I love the engraving on the bullet, and the cute outer packaging as well - it looks so classic.

I can't think of any discontinued lipsticks that I miss, but then again I only got into lipsticks last year or so, so I haven't had a lot of time to have loved and lost...

    1. Hi Lizzie, you are your own lemming creator, you should know. I have always loved Japanese makeup and brushes but find it harder to find--especially the brands that have never been sold in the US--and none of it available for me to see in person, so I appreciate bloggers like you who swatch and describe it for us.

Dain has helped guide me toward happy purchases, especially the lovely Shiseido powder blushes. She and Gaia share the "blame" for my new Hakuhodo collection, though I have since discovered your blog and ordered the H601 Slide Face Brush the other day based on your great review. (I'd been waiting for the K005 to come back in stock and needed to add another brush to my cart to justify the $10 shipping fee. ;)

  7. That is gorgeous!! Is it bad that I want it mostly because of the design?!?!

    1. Of course not, nikki! If we weren't drawn in by beautiful packaging and clever design, the department store brands would be out of luck because their customer based would be completely satisfied with drugstore purchases.

As for Chelsea Rose, I do not much care for gold packaging, and I think the clear rose would look more lovely against a silver container, but I still find this to be very pretty, with a decent weight to it, and I was surprised by the LOVE engraving.

I have never purchased an Estée Lauder lipstick before, so I am unsure if all of her Signature lipsticks are so engraved.

    2. I agree about the silver looking better. I am a sucker for lippies with engraving on them. This is also my kind of color!

  8. Ou, I am glad it worked for you! Mine doesn't have a LOVE imprint, however. I am in the process of looking for a replacement as it's been worn down to a nub, as it fills a specific niche in my stash.

    1. Interesting about the LOVE imprint. I wonder if the lipstick I purchased was part of a GWP. Matters not. It's a full-sized lipstick in the regular packaging, and it doesn't say 'not for individual sale' on the bottom.

I still have a missing link in my lipstick stash, the illusive MLBB shade. Chelsea Rose almost fits the slot except it's the tiniest bit too pink and opaque. I know my color is out there (Chantecaille Lip Chic Tea Rose would be IT if not for the brown undertones), and so I keep looking.

    2. I meant elusive, but illusive works if I really stretch it. :P

    3. If Chante Tea Rose was too brown on you, I would suggest Bourbon Rose.

    5. Thank you, Julia. I do enjoy that formula so I will add Boubon Rose to my list.
