Chanel Rouge Coco Shine 55 Romance: Swatches, Comparisons

Favoring clear, sheer lipsticks these days, which I find make my lips look less puckered, I have developed a love for the Chanel Rouge Coco Shine ($32) formula. I recently picked up Romance,  which has become my favorite and fits in nicely with my current pink obsession.

Romance is a clear, cool, coral-pink, and it contains no shimmer, which is rare for this formula. Even though the shimmer in a Rouge Coco Shine lipstick is always subtle and never frosty, I prefer my lipsticks to be creamy or shiny, without any sparkles whatsoever.

Look how clear it is. LOVE.  For the scent averse, however, know that it does smell like rosewater upon application, but I did not notice any taste.

NB: Any sparkle you see in the above photo is vestiges of whatever I took off my mouth before applying Romance.

Here is Romance compared to two other coral-leaning pinks, Guerlain Rouge Automatique Chamade (reviewed here) and Chantecaille Rose de Mai. Same color family, but Romance is more sheer and glossy.

Bottom line: Romance is a cool coral-pink winner.

Do you have a favorite color among the Rouge Coco Shine lineup? What other shades might you recommend a fair, cool-toned person?

  1. Hi Zuzu, thank you so much for your kind comments on my post today--- they really meant a lot to me!

I'm really glad you decided to post Romance after mentioning it on your pink post! I was entranced by your photo where its glassy pink coral color is on full display. The final touch with bag, nails, and dress caused me to plummet further down that rabbit hole. I think you've convinced me to wear NARS Niagara, which is my coral pink color :)

    1. Niagra looks like it would be a beautiful color, but I need to see it in person before I take that plunge. Coral is a slippery slope for me.

  2. Very pretty, I'll have to get that one at some point (we may as well accept our coco shine "problem" and go with it). I do think you might need to get #72 Effrontée, I think that one is coming out with your summer collection, not sure why we got it early. x

    1. I had completely forgotten about Effrontée but just want back and reviewed your post. Yes, I will definitely need that one. It looks like it might not have shimmer ... If so, that's double-plus good!

  3. I love Romance, but it is more straight pink on my lips. One of my favorite bright pinks! I just got G Chamade and I love it as well.

    1. I wish it were more straight-up pink on my lips. If there's even a hint of warmth in makeup, my body will broadcast it! Sometimes I can get away with it, sometimes I can't, and sometimes I think I am deluding myself because I like the way a color looks in the tube or pan. Chamade is one such color. I adore it, but it doesn't adore me.

  4. Wow, Zuzu, those swatches! Romance looks glorious. We seem to have very different skin tones, but you create these lemmings in me that will inevitably fail!

And yikes, I just bought Chamade. I hope it looks ok on my neutral/warm skin.

    1. Hi, Jane, thank you. All the credit goes to the beauty of Romance; I was just there as a witness. :)

As for different skin tones, Amy (Cafe Makeup) and Sabrina (The Beauty Look Book), who are both warm toned, have "sold" more makeup to me than they can imagine!

Like Romance, I get a sense that Chamade can suit both warm and cool skin tones—especially those who lean neutral—because it contains both pink and orange, though the orange is subtle in both.

Differences in skin tone is one reason I stared swatching on paper. Let the color stand on its own. I have certainly bought my share of lipsticks that looked incredible on the blogger/reviewer but turned into flops on me.

  5. Romance is GORGEOUS, Zuzu! It looks a bit like RBR Tongue Tickles minus the sparkle. Are they actually close, or is that my monitor playing tricks on me? I usually stay clear of lippies with any coral- more True Winter conditioning, rather than thinking for myself. However seeing you that you as a True Spring are able to wear a little coral provided that it's wrapped in a cool pink has caused the earth to shift on its axis for me!! I have neither Romance nor Tongue Tickles-- which would you suggest for me-- or are they different enough that I should have both in my stash. I think that it's about time that we start BBA (Beauty Bloggers Anon)-- I think that we enable each other more than we enable the non-bloggers who read our posts!! Hi, my name is Lola...

    1. I'll have to check later, but now that you mention it ... I think Romance might be (in color) a cross between RBR Tongue Tickles and Dissolved in Dreams. Without any shimmer. And Tongue Tickles is practically metallic in its shimmer.

I'll swatch 'em later and upload onto the forum. If the pic's worth a hoot, I will update this post, too.

    2. It really is so gorgeous! Thanks for doing the comparison-- I will definitely check here and the forum later! You have to take a look at Elvira's review of Tumulte-- I thought that I might be able to escape it, but her swatches and review are making me want it!

    3. Gaa, no comparison pictures today. I am having a horrific day at work--haven't had a break since 6AM, and no end in sight. It will be too dark for pictures when I finally get away. Hopefully tomorrow.

    4. Sorry that you had a crappy day at work! I hope this one is far better. Don't worry about the pictures one little bit!

    5. Ugh, just finishing my day from a 5AM start time. And the weather was glorious today! Picture perfection. Oh, well, soon.

  6. THAT BAG. I love it. Romance is pretty! I like that it leans coral, actually - true pinks are definitely not my color.

  7. I like the looks of Romance a lot, but I can't take my eyes off the Chantecaille one haha! Can you tell I have a thing for Chantecaille? And I'm not afraid to admit it. :)

    1. As do I. I remember the first time I sniffed Chanel nail polish remover and it smelled of roses. I wish they hadn't discontinued it, even though it was laughably overpriced for what it was. Then again, it's not every day you can buy nail polish remover in a glass bottle. ;)

  9. the name, the colour - perfect! what a beautiful shade, I love reds and never can say no to a gorgeous red like this *sigh*. the givenchy nail polsih looks yum! I never was a matchy-matchy girl but I do like that look a lot. I think I have to try my first matchy-matchy thing with pinks, that reminds me ... I need more pink :P

    1. Claire, I know what you mean about red lipsticks. They have been my weakness since the mid 90s when everyone else was wearing brown!

Nina Garcia would have me flogged, but I could not resist a little matchy-matchy addition. :^)
