Current Obsession: Pink!

This time of year it seems everyone else gets to enjoy coral and peach. Not I—those colors look dreadful on me. So I turn my gaze to delicate and/or bright pinks, and here are some of my current favorites:

Here's the list, from top left clockwise:
  • Chanel Ombre Essentielle in 48 Quartz (discontinued, reviewed here), a satiny pale-pink wash that opens up my eyes without being lab rabbity.
  • NARS Gaiety blush (reviewed here). So much softer and easier to wear than Desire, though it's a similar clear, bright pink. Gaiety is also subtly luminous, whereas Desire is matte.
  • Chen Man for MAC Beauty Powder in Play it Proper (limited edition, reviewed here), a silky, pigmented highlighting powder with pink cream undertones. (See also lola's (no longer secret) beauty blog for an excellent review.)
  • Chanel Le Vernis in 495 Mica Rose. A sheer-pink nail wash. If I wear this on fingernails, I apply a single coat so my pink nail beds can show through.I don't care for too much attention drawn to my hands, and I also spend too much time in the garden to fuss over manicures.
  • Chanel Glossimer in Star, (limited edition/discontinued), shimmering icy pink lipstick topper.
  • Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in 55 Romance (reviewed here). One of the few clear-pink, moderately-bright lipsticks I own that leans coral.
  • Chanel Le Vernis in 535 May. One of Chanel's new colors. I was slightly disappointed with April, only because it seems like it should have been called November instead, and I passed on the warm-apricot June, but May, a clear, mid-toned pink that leans warm. Prettier to look at than wear, but pink is pink.

And because life isn't just about makeup, here are a few of the other pink things I am loving right now:

double-file impatiens

clematis montana 'Maylene'

cercis canadensis 'Forest Pansy'

dicentra

And lest we forget ... the all-important Unbearable Catness of Being:

Hannibal cuddles with the GPS, hoping that someone with food will find him

How much more pink could it be? The answer is none. None more pink.

  1. I've been feeling some color families lately, too! Like blues! Bright, vibrant blues are my favorite. I love seeing color-themed posts - such nice order to things, haha.

    1. I love reading color-themed posts, so I thought I'd put one up. Blue is my favorite color; I wear it a lot in clothes. If my eyes were brown, I'd be more experimental with eye makeup, but my blue-green-grey eyes seem best suited for cool greys and subtle purples.

  2. Through the course of this post I regressed into a four year old girl in a tutu and tiara. Thank you!

I'm procrastinating on a yellow post right now :)

    1. Tutu! I need to get my ballet shoes out of winter storage (the real ones, where I had to sew the strap across the instep). Ah, yellow. Such a friendly, warm color—but it's a hard color for me to wear.

  4. You REALLY are a woman after my own heart, and my long lost twin!! LOVE. THIS. POST! First of all, I'm loving pink so much lately. Second, nothing better than pink noses and paw pads! Drools over all of the pink blossoms, and I think your lilac is probably just about to pop!! As for your makeup lineup- such a fantastic array. I have three of them (Gaiety, Play it Proper, and Star). I love all three so much! My true weakness is Star-- I think that this is the BEST item from the Soho Collection- I know many might find that to be heresy, but I love that perfect icy cool toned glossimer so much that I bought 3-4 of them. It is so great on top of lipsticks, but it is also lovely all by itself. I also have the exact same planter that contains your gorgeous impatiens- I snapped up two of them from Smith & Hawken before they closed their doors! Thanks for the post link and saying such nice things about my blog! xoL

    1. My lilac is a late bloomed. It's called 'Miss Kim', if I remember, which always makes me think of L'il Kim.

Funny thing about pink. I tried to outgrow it, the way I outgrew my little girl dresses. For so long I wore only red and deep rose lipsticks, but I have finally accepted my fate AND my face! I have delicate coloring, and pink just suits me.

That Chanel SoHo collection was one of the best I have seen in years, although The Rouge Allure Laque in Stunt made me look a bit cadaverous, even though I love the idea of a liquid lipstick. Star Glossimer is one of the few lip glosses I allow on my lips. It's so versatile, and I also like how it looks by itself. Lucky you to have bought so many. I waited too long and got the last one in the store, but it will probably last me decades.

Oh, don't eve make me think about Smith & Hawken. I am so sad that I can't shop there anymore. I bought beautiful windows boxes the summer before they went kaput, and I still remember my first purchase in 1992—Christmas ornaments, which I still have.

    2. I know just what you mean about trying to outgrow pink! Like you, I now embrace it because it really works with my cool coloring. The Soho Collection was definitely done right! Stunt didn't do much for me either, but Star how you twinkle!

I know, Smith & Hawken closing was such a sad day. I grew up going to S&H, and even worked there years ago. I have a lot of their teak patio furniture, tons of pots, tools, umbrellas, and odds and ends. Sadly the quality of their things really took a nose dive after Scott's Miracle-Gro bought the company (sort of what Estee Lauder did to MAC and Bobbi Brown)! So sad, I grew up going to their original store in Mill Valley as well as the one in Berkeley- and back then it was the best place ever. Still breaks my heart! Oh, the window boxes were amazing!

    3. Lucky you. I'd never been in a S&H store.

    4. It was so fantastic when it still sold top quality products: tools from England, pots from Italy & Spain etc. I miss those days! Heaven for gardeners!

    6. Aw, I'm so glad! I was having a great day, too. Beautiful summer day, a favorite outfit, pretty makeup, and major props from my boss during my 1x1 ... until I came home to a massive flying ant infestation swarming out of my air conditioner. The stuff of horror movies. Nothing pretty about that!

    7. I'm so glad that your day was so fantastic, at least up until the discovery of the massive flying ant infestation-- that's awful, but at least they weren't flying monkeys instead!! I hope that you can resolve that quickly!

  6. Oh, there's so much to love here. Delicate pinks always have room in my heart =D NARS Gaiety, Chanel Mica Rose, and Romance are so beautiful, just like the delicate flowers you showed. Are all the blooms from your own garden? I haven't started growing anything yet this season!

Also, I love the kitties' pink noses. My poodle also has a pink nose that I just can't get enough of!

    1. Hi Dovey, yes, those are all from my gardens. :) We had such an unusual winter (almost no snow) and a freak week of high 80s in March, and we're hitting 90 today, so things are blooming early. It's a riot of pastel color and gorgeous smells in New England right now.

My poodle had a pink nose! She was an apricot toy, and she was the best pet ever. Such a sweet temperament and no shedding! Not all my cats have pink noses. One has a brown nose, and two have grey, so they did not get to star in this post. >^._.^<

  7. So much pink haha! I go through colour phases, but pink is one I still have a bit of trouble with, especially blush. I think my favourite pink blush is Le Metier's Creme Fresh TInt in Mystique-dustier pinks like that I like on me, or peachier ones. That Chen Man one looks like something I could wear! I wonder if it's still available?
    Beautiful pics Zuzu!!

    1. If you like bright, clear pinks, I highly recommend it. Not only is it beautifully textured, the finish has very fine microshimmers, which makes it luminous (skip highlighter!) instead of sparkly. I absolutely love it, and bush isn't my thing. Even the price isn't that bad, all things considered.

Are there any similarities between Chen Man and RBR Sweet to Touch? It's always hard to to go by computer monitors...ugh. MAC- clearer, pinker/ RBR- slight gold beige tone?
    Thanks!

    1. Thank you, lippy girl.

The two powders are not much alike. Sweet To Touch is a peachy, warm, seashell pink with almost-imperceptible shimmer. Anyone with slightly less than oily skin could likely wear it as an allover setting powder, but I personally don't want to glow all over, and the powder is too emollient for me to wear that way.

Play It Proper is a cool, clear ivory with distinct pink undertones, very pale to be sure, and it has a more pronounced luminosity to it—without actually adding any shimmer/glitter (e.g., I feel comfy wearing it outside in direct sunlight). But I will still not wear it anyplace other than where I'd want to draw light, like the tops of my cheekbones, across my brow ridge, down the bridge of my nose, over the cupid's bow.

I've read some reviews that call PIP a blush, but I don't see it. I am quite fair, and it's doesn't add much pink color to me. I wear it on top of Gaiety for a little extra glow, and that duo are the best blush/highlighter combination I have found in years. I can stop looking now, although I think both might be limited edition. Story of my life, but I am restraining myself from backups.

I can hardly believe I am about to say this—because I've gone off MAC in recent years as quality deteriorates after the EL mothership takeover—but I prefer this Beauty Powder to the RBR powder. A closer (and more affordable) comparison to RBR's Sweet To Touch might be MAC's Beauty Powder in Light Sunshine, which is cream with pink undertones and pink and gold microshimmers.

I am curious now and will have to look at the three of them together.

  11. You really hit my hot button with those lovely pinks. I, too, have finally embraced my pink side after years of trying to love neutrals on my face with little success. I hesitated over the PIP beauty powder and now it's too late :( And I really need something similar. Will check out MAC's Light Sunshine. I'm really loving Illamasqua's Tremble blush these days. It would fit right into your palette. Had to order it from England as I couldn't find a vendor in Canada (and Sephora doesn't ship Illamasqua here for some reason) but it was so worth it. It lasts better than any blush I've ever used. Love your blog!

    1. Thanks, mousha!

I haven't seen Illamasqua's Tremble but I have Katie, and it also fits into my palette. I might to a pink blush comparison soon, which I had better do before I let most of my similar-colored/duplicate blushes go!

I know that PiP sold out at MAC really quickly, but it's still available at nordstrom.com, which is where I bought mine. Nordies says it doesn't ship internationally, but surely they can't exclude Canada, which is on the same continent for pete's sake. But I have given up being surprised by the many restrictions to Canada, silly as they are.

I tried to see if you had a blog, but I couldn't find one based on the email addy in your first comment. That wouldn't be your profile on MDA, would it? I gave up on his forum long ago, but I have his first cookbook and switched over to primal when I gave up gluten. I have been trying very hard to be paleo (really enjoy RW's podcasts), but dammit--I love my morning cappuccino.

  13. I love pink makeups too!!! As I've said in my previous comment (hehe) can't wait to use my Gaeity blush!!! What's your favorite pink lipstick? :)

    ReplyDelete

    1. What is this word "favorite" of which you speak? ;) Pink lipstick is not bad on me but it can look nude because my lips have pigment. The closest I get to pink is Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Boy, and Fetiche is one notch better, but my true loves are roses, like the above-mentioned Chanel RCS in Romance. MAC Viva Glam VI Limited Edition was really pretty, and I adore Lipstick Queen Jean Queen.

I also like hot pinks, but they have to be sheer. Chanel Glossimer in Jalousie is outstanding because it has no shimmer, so it's like a liquid lipstick. ♥

    1. Not at all. :) I remember being surprised that you were giving up Shiseido Carnation, but you said something like "in with one pink, out with another."

I love May! I think it leans a little rose in real life (more than pink) but pink, rose, blue-red ... it's all good.
